China Tops Medal Table at 66th International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia
China won the 2025 IMO for the 25th time, edging out the USA by 15 points at the competition held in Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) concluded on July 20, 2025, in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, drawing 630 contestants from 110 countries. China topped the unofficial team rankings for the 25th time in the competition's history, finishing 15 points ahead of the United States. The IMO is widely regarded as the most prestigious mathematics competition in the world for high school students and has been held annually since 1959. This year's edition awarded 72 Gold medals (to contestants scoring 35 points or above), 104 Silver medals (28+ points), 145 Bronze medals (19+ points), and 132 Honourable Mentions. Notably, five contestants achieved perfect scores across all six problems — the highest number to do so since 2001. For international university applicants with a strong mathematics background, IMO participation and medals carry significant weight in applications to elite universities worldwide, including MIT, Cambridge, Peking University, and ETH Zurich. Full individual and team results are available on the official IMO website at imo-official.org.
