The University of Missouri, often called Mizzou, is a public land-grant research university in Columbia, Missouri, and the flagship campus of the University of Missouri System. Founded in 1839, it was the first public university west of the Mississippi River and is known for establishing the world's first school of journalism. Mizzou is also recognized for its strong programs in agriculture, health sciences, and engineering, and is one of only six public universities in the U.S. with medicine, veterinary medicine, and law schools on one campus.
