Clarke University is a private Roman Catholic liberal arts university located in Dubuque, Iowa, overlooking the Mississippi River. Founded in 1843 as St. Mary's Female Academy, it is the only university in the United States established by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Clarke is known for its strong programs in nursing, physical therapy, education, and computer science, the latter having been founded by Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, one of the first people to earn a Ph.D. in computer science in the U.S..
